In May 2005 a beast as tall as a Labrador dog with big loping ears, a large mouth, light in colour which moved with a lolloping gait was mystifying residents of the heavily wooded Green Drive area in the Lancashire town of Lytham
Over twenty witnesses have reported seeing the animal which some describe as a “Hound from the Baskervilles,” an overgrown hare, a werewolf, one chap even likened it to Bigfoot, while another to the cartoon character Wile E. Coyote. Others simply believe it is a mangy fox, or a Muntjac Deer. The more sceptical folk in the area say there has been too much of the amber nectar flowing freely down some peoples necks.
Whatever it was, the residents were spooked and genuinely alarmed, more then once they looked over their shoulder on the nights they walked Green drive alone.
Sandra Sturrock reported to the Lytham St Annes Express: At about 11 pm, when I was out walking on the dunes opposite the King Edward and Queen Mary School, I caught sight of something large ahead of us. It was like a large collie, light in colour with large stick up ears. It was sitting high on one of the dunes watching me and my dog. I stood completely still for several minutes trying to see it more closely, adjusting my eyes but unfortunately, there was no moonlight that night.
I called my dog and put him on the lead and slowly inched towards the animal to get a better look but it ran off. I then went to where it had been and my dog went mad, sniffing all round the area.”
She added: “I have never seen anything like this before.
“I lived in Cheshire for ten years and frequently saw foxes and the odd deer. This animal was bigger than a fox and didn’t behave like any fox I’ve ever seen.
We’ve lived here five and a half years and I walk my dog three times a day on these dunes and have never seen anything like this before.
I called my dog and put him on the lead and slowly inched my way towards the animal to try to get a better look, but he stood up and ran off. I climbed up the dune to the place where he had been and my dog went mad sniffing all around the area and tried to make off after the animal. However, I was sufficiently spooked not to want to follow and decided to get back down to the well lit streets again.”
Artist and conceptual designer Sam Shearon was so taken with the beast not only did he produce an impression based on eye-witness accounts (right) he set up a website dedicated to the creature which can be found at
http://www.beastofgreendrive.com
He said: “I have based my drawing on all the accounts mixed together including those printed in The Express.”
Painter and Decorator Willie Davidson said: “”I was playing bowls near Green Drive when I heard a snarl behind me, it was like a monster out of Dr. Who and it needs tracking down.”
When the stories first hit the papers photographers, monster hunters and just the plain curious flocked to the area, their cars lined up and down Mythop Road, Saltcotes Road, and Ballam Road, all that was needed next was the hamburger stall and the T shirts, turning the sleep little village into a hive of monster hunting activity. A few weeks later the T shirts did arrive!
One unnamed witness reported: “I was walking through the drive when I saw it in the fields alongside.
“I have no idea what it was, but I could tell it was the size of a Labrador, but looked more like a hare.
“It can’t have been either – it was surreal.”
Lytham police announced that it had checked local zoos and farms but nothing seems to be missing, “it is very bizarre” they added. The police then handed over the investigation to the RSPCA.
Chester Zoo was shown a drawing if the beast and were said to be baffled for an identity to the creature, a spokesman said: “”It does not look like any mammal currently alive. It looks more like a mythical beast to us.”

Hello,
My name is D, I am Canadian, I live in the beautiful Lytham St. annes area with my husband Jeff who is British.
I have only been here a few months, I have to say Lytham, St. Anne’s and Blackpool are some of the most interesting historically, and strangest ( in good ways too) towns/cities I have ever encountered or lived in.
On around the 19th of March 2010, my husband and I were sitting in our car at Fairhaven lake in Lytham just before midnight.
It was a very nice evening and we were enjoying the peace and tranquility.
There was no moon that night, but the air seemed very still and the lights shining onto the lake made things rather romantic and relaxing.
We were both feeling very calm, talking about how nice it was, when I suddenly heard the tide come up from behind us,I found it a bit strange to hear the tide due to the fact that it doesn’t reach the shore that often.
I said to my husband excitedly, ‘listen to the waves!’, I thought it strange that we never noticed the sound of the waves before or why they seemed a bit strong, but at the same time it was a very soothing sound to hear.
After the tide hit the sea wall approximately three times it stopped.
We turned our focus back to Fairhaven lake, as we looked out in front of us, we noticed there was a strange animal crawling around, at first we thought it was a fox , since previous to this night we had seen two foxes on separate occasions and I had never seen a fox up close in my life.
I was excited,I like foxes and seeing another would have made the night just as good as the waves ,the lights on the lake and the relaxed , happy demeanour of ourselves at the time.
At second glance it seemed the shape and outline of the animal was quite different than a fox,and we continued to look on wondering what it might be.
It was dark so we assumed it was most likely a dog.
We waited to see it’s owner walk up in front of the car after this strange dog, but nothing.
The animal still remained in front of our car and we began to study it.
It hopped once, then stopped and my husband and I joked that it was a kangaroo, I said ‘no way its too small for that, it must be a wallaby hahaha’.
My husband than suggested that we turn our headlights on it to get a better view.
When the lights came on I was instantly startled and wished for the lights to be turned off, not just because of the sight in front of me, but I felt a strange sort of pity for the creature and didn’t want to scare it.
I can only describe to you, what my memory serves, bearing in mind when discussed several times with my husband to confirm the accuracy of the sighting, we both recall and described the same thing.
It was about the size of a medium sized dog, except for it’s legs which seemed to be much too long for it’s body.
It’s limbs were twisted, and gnarled or knotted in places(almost like misplaced muscles).
It was brownish in colour,no fur at all, and I do not recall a tail or ears.
I say that it was in my mind a sort of medieval -ish creature, best described as ‘gollum’ a character from the Lord of the Rings movies.
It looked up at us as soon as the headlights came on and it snarled, squinting with one eye, i guessed it was due to the light shining on it.
It had a face, almost human-like but deformed in a way.
It did not look happy we did that, and it looked very sad, miserable and evil.
To my recollection I cannot associate or make an accurate match with this creature in resemblance to any other animal i have ever seen in my ENTIRE LIFE.
It was eating something which we couldn’t see.
It crawled away eventually, but not in a way any other animal moves, sort of a slither/crawl type movement, twisting it’s body as it travelled on and eventually out of our sights.
It headed toward the path along the seafront.
My husband and I were in total shock!, we looked at each other and said,’Wow that was really weird, what was that?!?!?!’
We decided after a minute or two to get out of the car and have a look around.
We did, very briefly.
The night seemed to change, the atmosphere was thick and strange, when we looked towards the path it terrified us, and we did not feel safe anymore.
We got back in our car and drove away.
I’m not sure what that was we saw, or if anyone else has seen it as well.
I know one thing that is the strangest creature we have ever encountered, and definitely a good memory/story for our future grandchildren.
We thought we would share this with people to see if anyone else has had any similar experiences.
Thank you
