In May 2005 a beast as tall as a Labrador dog with big loping ears, a large mouth, light in colour which moved with a lolloping gait was mystifying residents of the heavily wooded Green Drive area in the Lancashire town of Lytham

Over twenty witnesses have reported seeing the animal which some describe as a “Hound from the Baskervilles,” an overgrown hare, a werewolf, one chap even likened it to Bigfoot, while another to the cartoon character Wile E. Coyote. Others simply believe it is a mangy fox, or a Muntjac Deer. The more sceptical folk in the area say there has been too much of the amber nectar flowing freely down some peoples necks.

Whatever it was, the residents were spooked and genuinely alarmed, more then once they looked over their shoulder on the nights they walked Green drive alone.

Sandra Sturrock reported to the Lytham St Annes Express: At about 11 pm, when I was out walking on the dunes opposite the King Edward and Queen Mary School, I caught sight of something large ahead of us. It was like a large collie, light in colour with large stick up ears. It was sitting high on one of the dunes watching me and my dog. I stood completely still for several minutes trying to see it more closely, adjusting my eyes but unfortunately, there was no moonlight that night.
I called my dog and put him on the lead and slowly inched towards the animal to get a better look but it ran off. I then went to where it had been and my dog went mad, sniffing all round the area.”

She added: “I have never seen anything like this before.

“I lived in Cheshire for ten years and frequently saw foxes and the odd deer. This animal was bigger than a fox and didn’t behave like any fox I’ve ever seen.

We’ve lived here five and a half years and I walk my dog three times a day on these dunes and have never seen anything like this before.
I called my dog and put him on the lead and slowly inched my way towards the animal to try to get a better look, but he stood up and ran off. I climbed up the dune to the place where he had been and my dog went mad sniffing all around the area and tried to make off after the animal. However, I was sufficiently spooked not to want to follow and decided to get back down to the well lit streets again.”

Artist and conceptual designer Sam Shearon was so taken with the beast not only did he produce an impression based on eye-witness accounts (right) he set up a website dedicated to the creature which can be found at

He said: “I have based my drawing on all the accounts mixed together including those printed in The Express.”

Painter and Decorator Willie Davidson said: “”I was playing bowls near Green Drive when I heard a snarl behind me, it was like a monster out of Dr. Who and it needs tracking down.”

When the stories first hit the papers photographers, monster hunters and just the plain curious flocked to the area, their cars lined up and down Mythop Road, Saltcotes Road, and Ballam Road, all that was needed next was the hamburger stall and the T shirts, turning the sleep little village into a hive of monster hunting activity. A few weeks later the T shirts did arrive!

One unnamed witness reported: “I was walking through the drive when I saw it in the fields alongside.

“I have no idea what it was, but I could tell it was the size of a Labrador, but looked more like a hare.
“It can’t have been either – it was surreal.”

Lytham police announced that it had checked local zoos and farms but nothing seems to be missing, “it is very bizarre” they added. The police then handed over the investigation to the RSPCA.

Chester Zoo was shown a drawing if the beast and were said to be baffled for an identity to the creature, a spokesman said: “”It does not look like any mammal currently alive. It looks more like a mythical beast to us.”

Hi,

How does this fit the description of the big loping ears and the sketch?  It’s an Anglo Nubian Goat and as you can see from the photo they can look pretty impressive, especially to someone who hasn’t seen one before!  They are by no means rare and I have seen them at every agricultural show that I have been to, plus many petting zoos, as they appear to be very friendly. By the way I am a believer in British big cats!
Do you know if the footage taken in the Forest of Dean during the two deer counts which apparently show big cats, is available, or will be made available to the public, and if not, why not?

Regards
Sue
